Indy 500, near tragedy: a tire takes off and grazes the grandstands full of people

A tire detached from Kyle Kirkwood’s crashed car, took off over the fences but fortunately ended up in a parking lot: no injuries but damage to parked cars

Not just shows: the Indianapolis 500 2023won by Josef Newgarden, also reserved moments of fear. It happened sixteen laps from the end. The cars of Felix Rosenqvist And Kyle Kirkwood were involved in a bad accident, which even saw one of the two cars roll over at very high speed. In addition to the conditions of the pilots, who fortunately turned out to be unharmed, the breath was held back by a tire splashed by Kirkwood’s car towards the stands.


The tire ended up towards the stands, overcoming the fences, and then going beyond the packed grandstand. No fans sitting in the racetrack were involved, but the panic didn’t end there because the tire ended up in the adjacent parking lot. Fortunately, no people were injured in this incident. The tire limited itself to hitting several parked cars, causing quite extensive damage. So a story with a happy ending for the spectators, even if the images of the affected cars, spread on the various social channels by the witnesses, make us reflect on what could have happened with less luck.
