The president of the Ukrainian Federation, Shevchenko: “Sport has a unique power in promoting rehabilitation and recovery”
Sport as a means to help amputees return to active life. This is the mission of the “League of Mighty”, the first amateur football tournament for amputees organized last weekend by the Ukrainian Federation. Five teams from all over the country, made up mainly of war veterans. “It is estimated that in Ukraine there are over 100,000 people with limb amputations” explained UAF president Andriy Shevchenko, underlining how football has “a unique power in promoting rehabilitation and recovery”.

The first edition of the “Winter Cup” was won by the Lviv team. “Football for amputees offers a wonderful opportunity for reintegration into society” commented the scorer of the winning goal. “When I play I don’t even notice that I’m missing a leg.”
The success of the tournament constitutes the first step towards the development of inclusive sports. In fact, in the coming years the Ukrainian Federation intends to create a complete system of football competitions for amputees, which is fundamental for overcoming physical and emotional challenges.
