In the summer, we usually spend a lot of time in skin-revealing outfits. This might make you want to try home sugaring.

Everyone can remove their skin hair if they want to. If a neat bikini line or legs are your choice, here are expert tips for sugaring at home.
Specialist cosmetologist at the Blue Lagoon beauty salon Niina Kortene tells the three best tips for home sugaring.
1. Peel and moisturize the skin carefully before sugaring
Peel the skin 1–2 days before sugaring. The skin should also be moisturized the day before.
– Sugaring should not be done if the skin is broken or burnt in the sun. The skin must be in good condition and healthy before sugaring, Kortene reminds.
This rule applies at home and when handling by a professional.
2. Hair length about a centimeter
The length of the hair should be about 1 centimeter. That way it’s not too long or too short.
– Too long hair blocks the hair during the application phase, which can feel painful. A hair that is too short will not work, because the sugar needs a sticking surface from the hair, Kortene explains.
3. Technology
When you make sugaring at home, you should carefully read the instructions for the product you choose. The skin should be cleaned before sugaring.
– If there is sweat or cosmetics on the skin, the sugar will not stick to the skin properly, says Kortene.
Apply powder to the skin after cleansing. The powder should be applied to the skin before sugaring. This prevents the sugar from sticking to the skin. The powder also absorbs any sweat that may appear on the skin during sugaring.
Apply the sugar mass to the opposite hair and perform the tearing in the direction of the hair. This prevents the hairs from breaking. At the same time, the possibility of ingrown hairs is reduced.
Remember good support extracts when sugaring. Supportive extracts relieve pain and prevent bruising, says the expert.
– When sugaring, you should take a good, firm grip with the other hand so that the skin is as taut as possible. When the skin is pink enough, the sugar does not stick to the skin and the process becomes a little less painful, advises Kortene.
At first, sugaring can be practiced in small areas in order to get a good technique.

The bikini area and armpits are sensitive areas
Kortene says that the bikini area and armpits are rather difficult areas to do yourself. He therefore recommends saving the cleaning of these areas for a professional.
– Getting support in these areas is difficult and it increases the risk of bruises and ingrown hairs, for example.
– These areas are also sensitive to pain, so sugaring yourself can be challenging, Kortene reminds.
This is how long the results last
According to Kortene, the results of sugaring last about 2–4 weeks individually. However, there are big differences between a first-timer and a veteran.
– After the first few sessions, hair can grow already after a week, because the hair grows from the hair follicle at a different pace.
– With regular sugaring, the hair grows in the same cycle and the amount of hair decreases.
By shaving, the hair always grows back in a stubble-like shape, while with sugaring, the hair becomes softer.
Saunas, swimming and sweating should be avoided for the first day
After sugaring, the skin may turn red and the skin may feel a sensation of heat, says Kortene. This is common, especially the first few times.
– The reaction of the skin is caused when the hair is pulled through the skin and the hair follicle is irritated.
Redness and skin reactions usually last 1-2 days.
– When sugaring has been done for a longer time, the skin no longer reacts strongly.
After sugaring, there are a few things to consider.
– It is important to keep the skin clean. At the end of the day, you should take a shower so that the hair follicles are not irritated.
However, Kortene reminds that it is good to avoid saunas, swimming, sweating and sunbathing for the first day.
– It is good to exfoliate the skin between sugaring about 1-2 times a week. The skin should also be moisturized daily to keep it healthy.
