In the middle of the night, Harry’s Chevrolet is set on fire: “They look good”

When they were alerted by the neighbor and quickly grabbed the fire extinguisher, it was already too late. Harry and Gea’s Chevrolet from Medemblik went up in flames last night. Five years of time, energy and money went up in flames in front of them. The car was set on fire, the sad owner firmly believes.

“Five years,” he says, his voice shaking. “Five years are in this.” Harry – big guy, impressive beard, a series of earrings in his right ear – is devastated by the sad sight of his Chevrolet, which was used as a camper.

“It was perfect, we converted it into a camper. It could accommodate mattresses, it had a kitchenette. Two years ago I repainted it and replaced the universal joint last week. Next year we were going to take it to Normandy on holiday. “

“Aw, your baby..”

All that fun suddenly came to an end. A neighbor driving by opens her car window on Uiverstraat in Medemblik in alarm. She puts her hand over her mouth and widens her eyes: “What happened here?!” She can hardly believe that such a fire has occurred in her neighborhood. “We heard a bang last night, but then it was quiet again. Oh, your baby…”

“Arson,” says Harry. Decidedly, without a doubt. “I saw the images from last night at my neighbors. You see a car driving back and forth a few times and then two guys get out. They started at the right rear wheel and not much later everything caught fire. It started at exactly 2 a.m. last night. The images are also sent to the police. They look good,” he refers to the possible perpetrators.

Forensic research must reveal whether arson was indeed committed, the police said. “If there are camera images, we would like to receive them,” says a police spokesperson. “That can help us enormously in the investigation.”

Harry sighs deeply, after a short night. “Who could have done this? I have no idea.” But then, a few seconds later, he shares his thoughts out loud. “I was once involved in a motorcycle club here in Medemblik, which I founded myself. I didn’t leave there very happily. They had a club evening yesterday, I know. That’s the only direction I can think of. But it is dangerous to to point out if you don’t know something. Enemies? I don’t have any.”

Partner Gea has also come out. Shared grief over a blackened Chevy. “I’m guessing I won’t get much from the insurance,” Harry laments. “Because the current value of such a car is low. I estimate the damage at around 10 to 12 thousand euros.”
