Van de Zandschulp had a good week, by reaching the final at the Winston-Salem tournament. In it he had to acknowledge his superior in the Hungarian Marton Fucsovics. He therefore rose to 73rd place on the world ranking. Against Rune, Van de Zandschulp was immediately broken and he also noted the necessary double errors, including a set point against 4-3. Rune then served the opening set.
The heat in New York was heavy from the sand sculpt, it seemed. He had trouble keeping food inside and let a doctor come on track. De Veenendaler was able to continue the party and the second set went without breaks. Rune struck 7-4 in the tiebreak.
Van de Zandschulp quickly came back 4-0 in the third set, but with a double break, surprisingly back to 4-4. Again it came to a tiebreak and Rune again turned out to be the strongest: 7-2.
It was the third time that Van de Zandschulp and Rune faced each other. The Dane also won the previous two times. That was in the final of the Munich GravelToernooi, in 2022 and 2023.
