At least 48 people died in the collapse of a gold mine in Mali on Saturday. This is reported by the AFP news agency, based on local authorities. It is an illegal gold mine in the West Mali, a region with a long history of mine accidents.
According to AFP, the disaster took place in a mine that used to be operated by a Chinese company. Among the victims were mainly young women, including a “woman with a child on her back,” said a local police source to AFP. Missing is still being sought.
Mali is one of the largest gold producers in Africa. For years, the authorities have been having to stop the illegal Delving of precious metal for years without success.
