Ilayda (15) died a year ago after a bus accident: “I kissed her and hugged her. But she already felt ice cold”

A year and a week. For so long, Sariye Önal (59) has lived with an emptiness that will never be filled. Her granddaughter Ilayda, barely fifteen, then lost her life in a collision with a scheduled bus at Genk station – a drama that was filmed by bystanders. Since then, Sariye has been going to the grave of the apple of her eye every day. “Among other parents and grandparents who also had to give up someone, I almost found a new family,” the grandmother testifies.
