Contrary to expectations, the A28 near Hoogeveen is already partly open again. The road had been closed in a southerly direction since Wednesday due to the risk of slippery conditions.
The closure was at the railway tunnel, causing traffic from Assen to Zwolle to detour.
The problem was the water on the road, which could freeze due to the low temperatures, threatening to turn the highway into an ice rink. According to Rijkswaterstaat, this cannot be argued against.
This afternoon, Rijkswaterstaat announced that the ice problems on the A28 are partly over. The left lane is dry, so it can be opened again. It was initially assumed that the entire section of road would be closed until Monday morning.
The stretch of highway near the railway tunnel in Hoogeveen has been a concern of Rijkswaterstaat for years. Water remains on the road due to a combination of the joints used and the pressure from below by the groundwater.
