Erica Meiland is quite turned off by Chantal Janzen during their TV confrontation in the talk show of Eva Jinek. Seven months later she says: “I was very disappointed in that, in Chantal.”
It has now been seven months since Erica Meiland had to justify herself in Eva Jinek’s talk show for her statements about veiled women and Islam. The reality star was almost canceled for comparing women in burqas to penguins, but in the end she survived the media storm.
Quarrel at Jinek
Erica was attacked during that broadcast by Chantal Janzen and Eva Jinek. “I like you very much, but I was shocked by this,” Chantal remarked. “You say, ‘I know there isn’t a girl who likes wearing a headscarf.’ Then I think: dear Erica, you cannot say that, because you cannot determine that…”
And Eva: “The principle that you can’t know what someone wants, what Chantal says… We can’t know why someone wants something, can we? (…) Can you imagine that if you say: ‘I want less Islam in the Netherlands’, then people are also offended? That people don’t feel welcome?”
Erica looks back
Now, seven months later, Erica still regrets that Chantal attacked her like that. “I was very disappointed in that, in Chantal. I always liked Chantal very much, but then I think: but you just don’t understand it well, you have not delved into it,” she said yesterday at the Libelle Zomerweek.
Erica was interviewed by Ebru Umar at the Libelle party together with her husband Martien. The interview cannot be seen in its entirety, but Shownieuws did shoot some images. The program broadcast the aforementioned quotes last night, together with the revelation that Erica has even more plans for her biographer, despite the Islam riot.
New book
Her biographer Jan Dijkgraaf is the one who put Erica’s controversial statements about Islam in her biography. Critics shouted that perhaps he could have protected her better, but Erica made her own statements of course and doesn’t blame him at all. In fact, a new collaboration is on the way.
Erica: “There is still something in the pipeline, but we can’t say too much about it yet. It’s about the near future. We are now discussing this with Jan Dijkgraaf, the writer, so it is still very early, but I do think it is a very nice idea. It’s about our lives.”
Five years
If the Meilandjes want to maintain their TV career, it seems advisable in these sensitive times to switch back when it comes to controversial views. Or will that TV career be over soon?
Do the Meilandjes still see themselves on television in five years’ time? Martien: “Well, I don’t think we’ll be on TV anymore. Yeah, you know, at some point it’s ready too, right?”
