There has been some fuss lately about reading hours for children by drag queens. This is intended to make children comfortable with diversity, but detractors see it as sexual indoctrination. The husband and father-in-law of Shownieuws presenter Dyantha Brooks are also extremely critical.

‘Do not get it’

Father-in-law Erik de Vlieger does not understand anything about those reading hours. “I think it’s all right, it’s just the choice of white (or white) parents with a good salary in the government or semi-government. I just wonder why?” he writes X.

And son Mick, Dyantha’s husband, agrees. “Exactly this.”

Erik: “I just don’t get it because nobody explains to me why it’s important.”

Lambert explains

EenVandaag star Lammert de Bruin answers. “So that those children, just like you (later), also like it.”

Mick is not convinced. “The parents of the children who live there automatically pass this on to their upbringing. This is purely for the stage, why? I have no clue. I have not had a book read of drags or other optical expressions to learn to respect people.”

Dress up party

It is not for the stage, says Lammert. “Perhaps that is less automatic than you think. And your upbringing at home is one thing. I once went to a church costume party as an old granny. After all, you’re dressing up as someone else. Had no idea that was weird as a kid. But I quickly learned that that day from children with other parents.”

Journalist Chris Klomp also thinks promoting diversity is good. “As far as I’m concerned, transgender people read aloud at school every week. Because you can see from the ‘adults’ of today that acceptance still has a long way to go. My goodness, what narrow-minded and infantile people you still have.”

Mick then sneered: “Drags and transgenders are not the same thing, oops.”

Scary

Chris doesn’t understand Camp Mick types. “I’m sick of those guys. The ‘protecting children’ as a shame for their own narrow ‘norms and values. Those children are a hundred times safer on such an afternoon reading than with that oh so cozy uncle who yells ‘PEDO’ on Twitter when he sees a transgender person.”

There is nothing wrong with those reading hours, says Chris. “No one is pushing this down their throat. Those reading hours have been around for years. They only make the news because extreme right-wing idiots want to feed the underbelly again.”
