“You can recognize a humpback whale by the blowhole on the front of the body,” says an employee of SOS Dolfijn. “That’s actually the bump. When they surface they always blow out and water shoots out.”
The report of the whale quickly circulated on Tuesday morning in a WhatsApp group for rare marine mammals, the employee said. “He was last seen near Castricum twenty minutes ago, I see.”
Humpback whales can be seen more often
Humpback whales have been appearing more and more often off the Dutch coast in recent years. Three weeks ago another one was spotted near Ameland. SOS Dolfijn advises you to report a sighting, but otherwise keep your distance. Admire the animals from the beach and don’t go into the water.
According to SOS Dolfijn, the animal at Egmond does not need any help. “This animal at Egmond appears to exhibit normal behavior,” the employee explains. “So we’re not worried.”
