Lando Norris won the Great Britain’s Grand Prix. There is also a big surprise on the podium.
After the victory in Austria last week, Lando Norris also won the Formula 1 race in Silverstone. At the Grand Britain’s Grand Prix, the McLaren pilot secured the first place before his team-mate Oscar Piatri. The two teammates now separate eight points in the driver’s World Cup. Piatri leads the rating.
World champion Max Verstappen (Red Bull Racing), who started in the pole position, initially fell back to tenth by a turner, but ultimately won fifth. The title defense should now be out of reach for the Dutch.
Thirdly, it was sensational Kick-Sauber-Pilot Nico Hülkenberg. For the German veteran, it was the first podium of his career. Hülkenberg has been holding the record for the Formula 1 driver with the longest dry spell with regard to reaching one of the first three places. In his 239th Grand Prix race, he was finally able to look forward to the podium.
Half an hour before the start there was another short cloudbreak on a rainy Sunday, which led to a partly wet asphalt at the beginning of the race. When the traffic lights went out, two top cars were missing in George Russell (Mercedes) and Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) in the starting line-up. The duo had driven into the box in the introductory round, switched from intermediate to slicks and hoped for a tactical advantage on a drying route. The plan should fail.
Pole-Setter Verstappen did not burn anything at the start and initially claimed the lead in front of Piatri. After a hectic initial phase characterized by several virtual safety-car phases, the Australian passed in the ninth round. In the sky, new inconvenience in the form of dark clouds announced – with consequences for Verstappen. Verstappen was missing in the ground rain, the world champion slipped into the grass in the duel with pursuer Norris and lost the next position.
The rain became more and more violent and triggered a safety car phase, at the end of which the last title dreams burst. First the Dutch was mottled at the re-start of Piatri, then the Red Bull turned when accelerating out. Verstappen fell back to tenth place. Piatri received a time penalty for his driving style under yellow flag, he had slowed down.
The race remained hectic. Hülkenberg, which was flushed forward by the right decisions in the tire poker, initially overtook Lance Stroll in Aston Martin. Only Hamilton could still be dangerous to the German. The Brit hurried, but in the end Hülkenberg fulfilled his dream. Norris dusted the victory from the punished Piatri.
