HSV signs Dennis Hadzikadunic – alternative to Saba Sazonov

Thanks to special transfer regulations

Hamburger SV have introduced a new defender, but this is not Saba Sazonov (21), who was recently associated with the Hanseatic League. Instead, central defender Dennis Hadzikadunic moves to the Elbe. The “Hamburger Abendblatt” had previously reported on an impending transfer.

The 24-year-old Bosnian joins from FK Rostov and is making use of FIFA’s special transfer rule, which allows foreign players to suspend their contracts for a year due to the war in Russia and Ukraine. Hadzikadunic was last on the field for the club in November 2021 – i.e. before the start of the war. In March 2022, the Bosnian international was drawn back to youth club Malmö FF for nine months under new FIFA rules before spending the second half of last season at RCD Mallorca.

“In Dennis we have gained an aggressive, hard defending central defender who brings a great deal of experience to the table,” said Director of Professional Football Claus Costa, adding: “We have known and followed Dennis for a long time and are pleased that the opportunity has now arisen to oblige him. He is a very focused and adaptable person, speaks several languages, also has a basic knowledge of German, and we are very much looking forward to him.”

At HSV Hadzikadunic, who was also linked with Schalke 04 in the winter, is the second defensive player after Guilherme Ramos (25; free transfer from Arminia Bielefeld). This is intended to compensate for the departure of Javi Montero (24), who is going back to Besiktas Istanbul after his loan, and the loss of Mario Vuskovic (21), who will continue to be absent due to his doping ban.

HSV access Dennis Hadzikadunic as an alternative to Saba Sazonov

The signing of Hadzikadunic is said to have shattered another effort to win Sazonov. The 21-year-old Georgian drew attention to himself with strong performances at the U21 European Championships and should have become interesting for other clubs as a result.
