Van der Vaart apologizes after statement about Japan footballers

Former Netherlands international Rafael van der Vaart has apologized after a controversial statement about the Japanese national team. The ex-professional of Hamburger SV As a TV expert during the Netherlands’ 2-2 draw against Japan, he said that the Japanese players “all look the same”. He wanted to explain why the Dutch defense had not prevented Daichi Kamada’s late equalizer. Van der Vaart later described the statement as a joke.

After clear criticism, van der Vaart declared that there was “no racist or discriminatory intent” behind his words. The anti-discrimination organization “Kick It Out” described the comments as “deeply disappointing” and criticized the spread of racist stereotypes. Van der Vaart then emphasized that he did not mean to offend or hurt anyone and apologized to anyone who felt offended by his statements.

Next setback for HSV professional at the World Cup

The Swiss national team will have to do without Miro Muheim in the second group game of the World Cup against Bosnia-Herzegovina. The 28-year-old defender from Hamburger SV is suffering from calf problems and is not available for the game on Thursday evening. As the Swiss selection announced, Muheim recently only completed individual training.

For Muheim, this continues an unfortunate tournament run so far. In Switzerland’s surprising 1-1 draw against outsiders Qatar on the first matchday, the HSV professional came on as a substitute shortly before the end and equalized with an own goal in stoppage time.
