HSV: Judgment in the doping case Mario Vuskovic only in up to 2 weeks

HSV assumes acquittal

The DFB sports court has still not made a decision in the doping case of HSV professional Mario Vuskovic on the third day of the hearing. As chairman of the board of the German Football Association (DFB), Stephan Oberholz announced on Friday “a written decision within the next two weeks at the latest”. “We need reasonable time,” he said on Friday. Oberholz had previously tried to settle “the whole thing” amicably behind closed doors. “But that failed,” he said.

6:30 p.m. update: HSV is assuming a positive verdict for its player. “From our point of view, there can still only be one acquittal because the necessary proof of a doping violation by Mario Vuskovic has not been provided,” said a statement on Friday. However, the club understands “that the DFB sports court is taking the time in this complex process to once again comprehensively assess the entire body of evidence and also to let the impressions of today’s oral hearing have an effect on you”.

21-year-old Vuskovic is suspected of EPO doping. Again he denied the allegation. “I am innocent. I have never cheated in sport and I never will,” said the Croatian. “Every day I wish for this nightmare to end. Above all, I fear that tomorrow it can hit another athlete.”

In a sample taken on September 16, the central defender was found to have exogenous erythropoietin (Epo). The result was confirmed in the B sample in December. In November, Vuskovic was temporarily suspended by the DFB. He faces a ban of up to four years.

If he is convicted, he could go before the DFB Federal Court. If there is an acquittal, the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) and the National Anti-Doping Agency (Nada) would have the opportunity to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas). During the three days of negotiations, a fundamental dispute about Wada’s epo analytics had developed.
