SV Darmstadt 98 continues its run in the 2nd Bundesliga and beats Hamburger SV with a draw from second place in a fast-paced game. After the 2:2 (1:2) on matchday 15, the “Lilien” are now unbeaten in eight second division games.

Ransford Königsdörffer (10th minute) and Adam Karabec (45th) shortly before the break gave HSV the lead twice. Aleksandar Vukotic (33rd) and Kilian Corredor (63rd) each equalized for the guests.

In the narrow top group of the 2nd league, Hamburg (24 points) lost second place after the third home draw in a row and is now only seventh. But the gap to leaders Paderborn is only three points. With 21 points in tenth place, Darmstadt is slowly moving towards the top group.

Darmstadt coach Kohfeldt thought more was possible

Florian Kohfeldt found that “We deserved the win more than HSV. We were better in the game for a long time. It only gets a bit wild from the 70th minute onwards”. Hamburg only made it through the individual quality of his team “embarrassed” to bring, said Kohfeldt at the Sportschau microphone.

HSV coach Merlin Polzin was not satisfied with the result: “That was what we wanted to see from the boys: that we play forward courageously, especially at the end, the stadium was full.” Even if he wasn’t happy with the result, it was a fair draw.

Königsdörffer finishes strongly to give HSV the lead

In terms of play, the guests got off to a better start on Sunday: after eight minutes, Isac Lidberg only hit the post. But the first real exclamation mark was made by the “Rothosen”. After a fine pass from Jean-Luc Dompé, Königsdörffer passed between two defenders and pushed the ball into the goal from eleven meters to make it 1-0.

However, Darmstadt was hardly impressed and was immediately back in the game in an intense game and was the more active team going forward. After almost half an hour, the guests rewarded themselves for it. Following a free kick, Corredor received the ball on the left wing and hit the perfect cross into the six-yard box. There, Vukotic used his two meter height perfectly and pushed the ball in with his head down to the right to make it 1-1.

Dream goal from Karabec to give HSV the lead again

For the “Lilien”, who continued to do a little more for the game afterwards, it was the reward they deserved. But the hosts didn’t care. Shortly before the break, HSV followed up. After a free kick whistle on the right edge of the penalty area, Marco Richter switched quickly, fed Karabec and turned the ball perfectly from the edge of the penalty area into the top left corner.

The Hanseatic League went into the break with a lead and self-confidence. Round two started evenly. HSV had the first good finish through Richter (59th), but the shot went just past the goal to the left. But the guests remained patient – and also struck – with the help of the Hamburg team.

Corredor brings Darmstadt back

With a long cross from the right, William Mikelbrencis misjudged himself in the center. Corredor took the ball behind him with his chest and shot an unstoppable shot from eight meters to make it 2-2. Afterwards, it was clear to both teams that one point was not enough for them.

Vukotic (71′) headed Darmstadt just past the lead. On the other hand, the advanced Daniel Elfadli (76th) hit the crossbar with a header from eleven meters after a beautiful Muheim cross. Shortly before the end, substitute Davie Selke (86th) failed with a shot from close range against the strongly reacting 98 goalkeeper Marcel Schuhen.

Final phase with chances every minute

Darmstadt also still had a good chance of winning. Substitute Oscar Vilhelmsson (88th) pushed the ball narrowly past the far corner from the left after a counterattack. Shortly afterwards, HSV goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes (89th) was there twice in dire need after a free kick including a follow-up shot.

Selke (90+1) missed the last big chance of a fast-paced final phase with an open visor when he pushed the ball into Schuhen’s arms from five meters. So in an offensive game it ended up being a draw that was fair to the performance.
