HSV coach Tim Walter considered resigning in the summer

HSV coach after missed promotion

HSV coach Tim Walter thought about resigning after losing the Bundesliga relegation last summer – but after some deliberation decided to continue. The 47-year-old narrowly failed with Hamburg in the decider against Hertha BSC in 2021/22, and a year later the second division team was clearly at a disadvantage against VfB Stuttgart.

“There are people who say that I can only be a coach at HSV because the team stands by me. I don’t want to judge that. However, I find it strange that there was never a public discussion about whether I still wanted to be a coach at HSV,” Walter wrote in a detailed article in the magazine “11Freunde”. “Honestly, after missing out on promotion, I thought about it for a few days. We gave everything, it wasn’t enough again, I was deeply disappointed. I hadn’t lived up to expectations of myself.”

Walter took over from the North Germans in July 2021 and scored an average of 1.84 in 82 games. When the club was in the second division, no coach was longer in office than the former youth coach of FC Bayern and Karlsruher SC. “I’m the one who puts himself in the wind that keeps everything away from the team, but I also need energy. My consequence was that I made my leading players like Sebastian Schonlau (captain; ed.) and my assistants even more responsible and gave them more responsibility,” said Walter.

In the “Sky broadcast”, “HvK & Tusche – Dein Zweitliga-Talk” the trainer explained (quoted via “Picture”), when asked about his thoughts: “Yes, of course it was difficult. And yet you have people around you with whom you talk, also in the club, with whom you put your heads together. You reflect on yourself, analyze the past few years with your coaching team, the sports director (Jonas Boldt; ed.) or Claus Costa (director of professional football; ed.). And then we quickly agreed that we’re not done with our mission. Then the decision was quickly made that we would start again. With full power and full vigour. I am very, very happy. I can say for myself that it was a good decision.”

HSV coach Walter critical: Sayings can fall on my feet

After a 4-2 defeat at KSC last March, Walter allowed himself to be carried away by the statement that the opponents didn’t even know that HSV would soon be playing top class again. “It’s clear that a sentence like that can fall on my feet. But: I was so convinced of my team, of our game idea, that this belief was greater than the thought of failure,” said the Bruchsal player.
