How much water should you drink during a heat wave?

This week, the heat wave tends to exceed 30 degrees Celsius in the AMBA region. Days ago, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) issued a yellow and orange alert for at least 8 provinces, for which various specialists warned about the impact of heat on health and the need to drink a certain amount of water daily to prevent dehydration.

For these types of temperatures, a daily intake of fluids is recommended to avoid dehydration and heat stroke. The suggestion of North American health organizations is the following: 15.5 glasses, equivalent to 3.7 liters, of fluids per day for men, and 11.5 glasses, equivalent to 2.7 liters, of fluids per day for women.

Experts recommend that for those who do not have the habit of drinking water and find it difficult to complete the indicated amounts daily, the recommendation is to choose certain times of the day to serve as a reminder: when you get up, when you arrive at work, at lunch or dinner, when you get home and before going to sleep, among others. Also, always carry a bottle filled with water.

These measures are extreme with care in pregnant women, children under 5 years of age, older adults, and people with respiratory diseases, heart conditions, high blood pressure and diabetes. In the case of infants and babies, specialists recommend breastfeeding them more frequently, offering them safe and fresh water, wetting their heads and bodies, keeping them in cool places, and not exposing them to the sun.

Orange alert

It is also important Do not drink alcoholic or sugary drinks. Their consumption tends to generate heat and is counterproductive to avoid heat stroke. In addition, you should avoid going outdoors at midday and maintain a light diet, especially focusing on fruits and vegetables.
