FIFA and FIGC clarified
Marco Pellegrino will spend the second half of the 2023/24 season at US Salernitana. The 21-year-old central defender is on loan from AC Milan, as both clubs confirmed on Deadline Day – so far, so normal. However, the move almost failed because an error in the Argentine transfer system initially blocked the deal.
Pellegrino only moved from youth club CA Platense to the Rossoneri in the summer for 3.5 million euros. The 2022/23 season of the Liga Profesional in Argentina was played from January to July, which is why the defender played in competitive games for his former club until shortly before his transfer to Europe – most recently on July 30th. The Argentine association had the deadline for the change of season according to the Italian transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio However, it was incorrectly recorded in the system on June 30th, which now caused problems.

According to international transfer regulations, professionals are allowed to be registered with a total of three different clubs during a season, but only play for two. Since Pellegrino’s appearances at Platense in July already counted for the current season, the deal with Salernitana could not initially be completed.
However, the Lega Serie A quickly noticed the reason and called in the Italian association FIGC and FIFA. The Argentine association was made aware of the system error and Pellegrino’s transfer was still able to take place in time. Pellegrino could be on the pitch for the bottom of the Serie A table as early as Sunday.
