Switzerland can again have legitimate hopes for the quarter-finals at the women’s European Championship. Iceland’s dream of the K.-O. round has broken.
Geraldine Reuteler shot the Swiss national women’s team for the first victory at the home European Championship. The midfielder of Eintracht Frankfurt scored the redeeming goal for the tournament hosts (76th minute) in the second round in the 2-0 victory in Bern and thus caused collective ecstasy in the ranks in the Wankdorf stadium. Alayah Pilgrim brought the final decision shortly before the end (90th).
After the opening of Norway, Switzerland in Group A, like Finland, is now three points in Group A after two games. On Thursday, the two teams meet for the decision -making game for the quarter -final ticket in Geneva.
The victory of the Swiss in the meantime brings two further decisions. Norway, which previously beat Finland 2-1, is the first team in the quarter -finals of the European Championship after two victories. Iceland, on the other hand, has left. The team around the ex-Wolfsburg sveindís Jónsdóttir had already lost their opening match against Finland with 0: 1 and can no longer reach second place in the group on the last match day.
Iceland in Bern had a chance of winning. Ingibjörg Sigurðardóttir failed after just a few seconds on the latte (1st). In the second round, too, the Icelanders met the crossbar, this time by Karólína Vilhjálmsdóttir (48.). After that, however, Switzerland was getting stronger – and rewarded. After Reuteler’s hit, Leila Wandeler could have increased shortly afterwards. But her shot also clapped the aluminum (80th). Pilgrim did better shortly afterwards.
