Goalkeeper committed long-term
Holstein Kiel announced two contract extensions before the last home game of the year, Saturday at 8:30 p.m. against Hannover 96. Midfield veteran and co-captain Lewis Holtby (33) remained committed to the “Storks”, as did goalkeeper Timon Weiner (24) – until 2025 or, in the long term, until 2027.
“Lewis Holtby identifies one hundred percent with the KSV and with our path and has been one of the top performers in our team since day one,” said Kiel’s sports director Uwe Stöver in a statement from the club. “He leads with an impeccable attitude and takes responsibility on and off the pitch. We are therefore happy and happy to have him on our team beyond the summer.”
Stöver said about Weiner’s extension: “Timon Weiner has been an important part of our goalkeeping team in recent years, who has developed into a reliable support during this time and especially this season. We are therefore very pleased that we can retain Timon for the long term.”
Holtby moved to Kiel from Blackburn Rovers in 2021 and has since played 65 games for the club – he was only on the field more often for HSV (138 times) and Schalke (77). The three-time national player is currently second in the 2nd Bundesliga table after several substitute appearances at the start of the season under coach Marcel Rapp. In 17 competitive games to date, he has scored two goals and four assists.
Weiner, meanwhile, is one of Kiel’s top performers this season. The Schleswig-Holstein team had already signed the Essen native from Schalke 04’s youth ranks in 2018, but it took almost five years for him to make his first appearance in the lower house: he was given the chance on the last matchday of last season. At the start of the season, Weiner was actually number two behind Thomas Dähne (29), but slipped into the starting line-up on matchday four and hasn’t given up the place since. Its market value has increased eightfold to 800,000 euros since July, and in the last second division update it increased by 300,000 euros.
