Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is the most successful song in Germany & overtakes Udo Lindenberg’s “Komet”.
The Christmas hits season is in full swing again. In addition to classics like “Last Christmas” by Wham! and Melanie Thornton’s “Wonderful Dream (Holidays Are Coming)”, of course a very special song cannot be missed: Mariah Carey’s long-running hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You”.
Biggest success in Germany – ever
The 31-year-old track is charting in Germany again this year. Since the week starting December 5, 2025, it has been back at number one in the official German charts. This makes the hit the song that has been at the top of the German charts for the longest time – ever. Carey knocks “Comet” off its throne. The title comes from German rocker Udo Lindenberg and rapper Apache 207 from 2023. It was Lindenberg’s first number one hit as a solo artist. After its release, it stayed in the charts for a total of 118 weeks, 21 of which were at number one.
Christmas late bloomer
In 1994, Mariah Carey, then just 26 years old, created her Christmas hit that has aged more than well. In Germany it immediately landed in the charts – but rather in the upper midfield. The song had even less success in the USA. It wasn’t until 1999 that it stayed at number 83 in the charts for a week. But the great success was still a long time coming. Twelve years after its release, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” made its comeback and continued to climb towards the top of the charts over the years. Since 2019, the pop classic has landed at number one in Germany every year, as well as in Austria, Switzerland and the USA.

The queen of the Christmas charts
Mariah Carey is one of the most successful singers in music history. In total, she has recorded 19 number one songs in the USA, won five Grammys and sold more than 220 million records. With “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” she currently holds three Guinness World Records world records: the highest chart position by a holiday solo artist in the Billboard 100, the most streamed track on Spotify in 24 hours, and the most weeks of a Christmas song in the UK Top Ten. However, she has only won one prize for the piece so far: in 2024 she received the Australian Gold Record.
