From July 1, you will pay more for ‘small’ speeding fines and talking on the phone behind the wheel. The government is increasing the immediate collections by 10 percent, says Minister of Justice Annelies Verlinden (CD&V) in the Nieuwsblad.

Verlinden confirmed in the newspaper that “the increase in the fine amounts for immediate collections will come into effect on July 1.”

Driving slightly faster than the permitted 50 kilometers per hour will cost you 58 euros and 10.42 euros in administration costs until June 30, or approximately 68.42 euros in total. After that it will be 63.8 euros and an additional 10 euros in administration costs, about 73.8 euros in total.

Anyone who is just above the alcohol limit of 0.5 per mille will soon have to cough up 217 euros. A fine for calling while driving will cost you 201 euros next month.

The increase in immediate collections should yield around 50 million euros per year. That extra money will be “reinvested in justice,” according to Minister Verlinden. Her department is struggling with overcrowded prisons and dilapidated courthouses, among other things.

At the end of December, the De Wever government announced that traffic fines would become more expensive. By 2025, traffic fines in our country would generate revenues of around 600 million euros. In 2025, the police recorded more than 10 million traffic violations for the first time, an average of around 27,000 fines per day.
