HHLA share: Bremen port logistics company BLH remains open to cooperation with HHLA

The Bremen port logistics companies BLG Logistics Group and Eurogate remain open to cooperation and continuing discussions with Hamburg competitor HHLA.

“Public speculation that these discussions were interrupted because of questions about company valuations or because of aspects of co-determination are not true,” said the CEO of the BLG Logistics Group, Frank Dreeke, to “Welt am Sonntag”. The only cause is “external economic reasons”. However, it is quite conceivable that the talks would be resumed in some time.

Before the corona pandemic, Eurogate and Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) had discussed merging their northern German container terminals in Hamburg, Bremerhaven and Wilhelmshaven, but broke off the talks during the pandemic. BLG is majority owned by the city of Bremen, Eurogate 50 percent each by BLG and the Hamburg Eckelmann family. HHLA, in turn, is majority owned by the city of Hamburg.

“The uncertainties that existed when we interrupted the talks still exist – especially the long-term consequences of the pandemic and the consequences of the war in Ukraine,” said Dreeke. Before the talks can be resumed, there must be more planning security. “At the moment we cannot say when that will be.”

Eurogate co-managing director Michael Blach sees the western expansion of the Port of Hamburg as a great opportunity for a leap forward in automation and the planned climate-neutral operation of another terminal section. Eurogate is still interested in this. “We need to discuss and negotiate the details further with the HPA port administration and the Hamburg economic authority.” For example, it is also about the distribution of costs for the necessary expansion of the turning circle at Waltershofer Hafen.
