Here are the tops and flops for the 2021–22 ski season

Iltalehti selects the best successes and the worst disappointments of the 2021–22 season.

The skiing competition season 2021–22 is in the package without a few events in Lapland. Who was the best athlete of the season? What about the biggest disappointment? What was the worst mocha of the winter? Who left the trails? Where was the farce of the farce seen?

Skier of the year

Reijo Jylhä (RJ): – Alexander Bolshunov. The medal balance at the Olympics is essential. It is a little harder for women to name. Jonna Sundling evolved from a sprinter to a distance traveler, but I say nonetheless Therese Johaug.

Santtu Silvennoinen (SS): – Johannes Kläbo. He won the Tour de Skin and was almost unbeatable in sprints down to Olympic gold. A great appreciation, especially for the 15-kilometer traditional intermediate start Olympic bronze.

A disappointing year

SS: – From Riitta-Liisa Roponen I expected much more. He was left with a few points from the World Cup. The biggest disappointment is Johaug’s early season winner Frida Karlsson melting from Tour. He is a tactical cardboard head.

RJ: – I give mercy to “Ritu” because that’s the age already. Vilma Nissinen was more disappointing. I assumed he would have taken the next step forward, but he took them back.

Newcomer of the year

RJ: – Even though it’s only a guy in his twenties who hasn’t been successful in the adult series yet, I raise Niko Anttolan. It even has Iivo Niska a more talented and better skier in the future.

SS: – Alexander Terentyev, 22, was embarrassingly superior in the Ruka World Cup sprint. The bet continued throughout the season. About Finns Jasmin Kähärän the success was handsome: from outside the box several times for World Cup points and the Olympics.

Moka of the year

RJ: – The International Ski Federation FIS canceled three World Cup weekends: France, Slovenia and Russia and did not get any to replace. That’s a really bad performance.

SS: – The betrayal of the Norwegian corona discipline. They stayed at the finishing camp in Italy before the start of the Olympics in the same place as the Finns. No Finn got sick, about a dozen from the Norwegian team. The Drammen and Holmenkollen World Cups lacked almost the entire men’s A national team when everyone was in the crown.

Surprise of the year

SS: Jonna Sundling was completely surprised. Impressively, the Queen of Sprint rose to the podium at Holmenkollen after a 30-mile traditional race. The most surprising Finns Remi Lindholm: regularly for World Cup points and brightly for the six-man Olympic team.

RJ: I say this to Terentev. Not because he was superior to Ruka, but because the Russian I considered a traditional sprinter took the bronze from Beijing’s free sprint. Among Finns, Remi and the 27-year-old should be mentioned Ville Ahonenwho came from outside all national team groups for World Cup points and Finnish Championship medals.

Competition place of the year

RJ: It’s Ounasvaara.

SS: – You’re a little behind … I say Vantaa. I greatly appreciate the track master Juha Savolainen and the work of partners. This year, Vantaa had frosty and satisfying weather, but the big picture is always a very tough thing when skiing the Finnish Cup in the Helsinki metropolitan area in mid-January.

RJ: I had a little humor. When I got to deal with Juha and his team during my time as head coach, it is not difficult to disagree with Vantaa. Another hard track factor is Pete Forsman In Espoo.

Coach of the Year

RJ: – Olli Ohtonen. But he has received so many honors that I would not give it to him. I’m naming Juho Mikkonen. It is not easy to be a husband and a coach at the same time. Mikkonen moved directly from the athlete Kerttu Niskasen as a coach.

SS: – Olli Ohtonen. Iivo Niskanen was once again in the best condition of the season at the most important moments of the season.

Farce of the year

SS: – The 50-kilometer men’s race for the Olympic Games became a 28-kilometer stump due to the stupidity of the FIS and the race organizers.

RJ: – Race cancellations are also suitable as a farce. The information came very well in time, but nothing could be done.

Competition of the year

RJ: I should ask my wife how much I have sat and how much I have stood during the race. The only race where I pretty much left the glove was the 30-kilometer free Olympic start for women when Kerttu came back for bronze. It went deep into emotions.

SS: – Lahti World Cup men’s 15 km traditional break start. I got to watch it as a regular viewer with no work obligation. A multi-faceted competition that ended in the best possible way for Iivo Niskanen to win.

Graduates of the Year

SS: – Of the toughest names Dario Cologna and Charlotte Kalla left the trails. The careers of the old Masters slid down a steep downhill slope. How did Reijo analyze them?

RJ: – Unfortunately, during the farewell season, the trend was downward in every respect, but the careers were great. Kalla probably won 29 Swedish championships and was the best in the world at his best. Cologna’s three consecutive 15-kilometer Olympic golds in 2010-18 were a great accomplishment.
