Although the details of the new standard have not yet been revealed, the HDMI Licensing Adminstrator has confirmed that the new standard will bring the next generation of HDMI technology. The new technology enables a higher resolution, refresh rate, and higher quality data transmission. The publication also hints that utilizing the standard may require the purchase of a new cable.

The HDMI 2.2 standard may enable support for uncompressed high-resolution video at a higher refresh rate. The current standard supports data transfer at a speed of 48 gigabits per second and, through compression, resolutions such as 8k 60 hz. HDMI 2.2 may either eliminate the need for compression or improve its implementation, which would make the content of higher quality.
