The German tennis legend Boris Becker has clearly criticized the current format in the Davis Cup.
“People, whoever came up with these regulations has no idea about tennis! A change has to be made quickly, perhaps even back to the old format with home and away games,” said Becker in the Eurosport podcast “The Yellow of the Ball” . The two-time Cup winner complained that the change in mode had “taken away the soul” of the Davis Cup.
Becker (55) hopes that there will be a reform of the prestigious competition after the election of the world association president next week.
Then the President of the German Tennis Federation, Dietloff von Arnim, will compete against incumbent David Haggerty from the USA. Haggerty had redesigned the Davis Cup several times in recent years together with the investment company Kosmos.
The group games in the intermediate round are currently taking place – mostly in empty arenas. The Swiss Stan Wawrinka recently criticized this by posting a video from Manchester on X, formerly Twitter, in which there were hardly any spectators.
The German tennis men did not qualify for the intermediate round. They are fighting to stay in the World Group this weekend in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Without the injured Alexander Zverev, Daniel Altmaier opens the duel as the top German player at 12:00 p.m. (Servus TV Germany).
