In 2020, Iltalehti interviewed plastic surgeon Antti Koske about multiple nipples. According to Koski, nipples can appear elsewhere on the body than the chest area. They can be in the lower limbs, in the ear or, for example, in the neck. The reason for the phenomenon is that usually two nipples develop in the fetal stage, but sometimes more develop. Extra nipples are placed in different areas as the fetus develops.
It is even possible that a person does not know that he has an extra breast or nipple. Extra breasts and nipples can look so vague that they are not necessarily distinguishable from moles, for example.
Koski said that he personally comes across patients with extra breast tissue or nipple about 1-4 times a year. He was surprised by the generality of it himself. The phenomenon is slightly more common in women than in men.
