Handball European League – Flensburg loses, “Recken” draw

As of: November 28, 2023 10:27 p.m

Handball Bundesliga team SG Flensburg-Handewitt suffered its first defeat in the European League on Tuesday, losing to Kadetten Schaffhausen 24:25 (16:15). TSV Hannover-Burgdorf couldn’t get past 30:30 (14:14) against HC Kriens-Luzern.

In Switzerland, Flensburg showed an overall weak attacking performance. Schaffhausen, on the other hand, played a strong game and thwarted the Schleswig-Holstein team with aggressive defense. DHB captain Johannes Golla and Johan Hansen were the best SG throwers with five goals each. Ariel Pietrasik scored six times for the hosts.

HBL top game against Melsungen on Friday

With their victory, the cadets made it into the main round, for which the SG has also already qualified. The handball Bundesliga team will play its last game in Group E next Tuesday (6:45 p.m.) at home against HC Lovcen-Cetinje from Montenegro. In the long-distance duel, Schaffhausen will be fighting for victory in preliminary group E. Before that, however, there is the league’s top game on Friday (8 p.m.) against Melsungen in the “Hölle Nord”.

After a quick 2-0 lead in the third minute of the game, the North Germans had problems with their attacking game. They repeatedly failed because of the Croatian keeper Kristian Pilipovic in the Cadets’ box. The hosts were ahead for much of the first half. With Mads Mensah Larsen’s goal to make it 12:11 (23rd), Flensburg took the lead again. At 22:19 (45th), the lead was three goals for the first time. But the Swiss didn’t let up and rewarded themselves in the final phase. The Icelander Odinn Thor Rikhardsson scored from seven meters half a minute before the final whistle to make the final score.

“Stretch” in the main round against the Lions

Just as the SG was able to cope with the defeat, the draw didn’t change anything for the “Recken”. Coach Christian Prokop’s team had already qualified for the main round, in which the Lower Saxony team will meet, among others, the Rhein-Neckar Löwen in the new year.

Schmid excels with 14 goals for Lucerne

Nevertheless, coach Christian Prokop’s team would have liked to keep their clean slate. But that wasn’t possible against Andy Schmid in top form. The playmaker, who delivered outstanding performances for the Rhein-Neckar Löwen in the Bundesliga for twelve years, scored 14 goals for Lucerne. Maximilian Gerbl and Vincent Büchner each scored five times for the hosts, who were still leading 24:22 in the 49th minute.
