As of: November 21, 2023 10:44 p.m

Fourth game, fourth win: Both TSV Hannover-Burgdorf and SG Flensburg-Handewitt qualified early for the main round with this flawless record in the Handball European League. The “Recken” won on Tuesday evening with 34:29 (16:16) at AEK Athens, the SG with 38:35 (19:15) against Elverum HB from Norway.

This means that both teams have reached their stage goal after two thirds of the preliminary round. Hannover-Burgdorf leads Group B with 8:0 points, just as confidently as Flensburg-Handewitt leads Group E.

SG Flensburg-Handewitt almost lost a clear lead

A week after the 33:32 tremor win at Elverum HB, SG Flensburg-Handewitt was also really challenged by the Norwegians in their own arena. After 18 minutes, SG coach Nicolej Krickau’s team was only 11:10 ahead. Building on strong saves from goalkeeper Benjamin Buric, the Schleswig-Holstein team managed to pull away from the Scandinavians. Not least thanks to the accurate Danish pivot Lukas Jörgensen (six goals in the first half), the score was 19:15 for the North Germans after 30 minutes.

Just under a quarter of an hour before the final siren, the game seemed already decided: the Schleswig-Holsteiners were ahead 32:24. But the Norwegian record champions were far from giving up – and Flensburg offered far too much. First, defense specialist Blaz Blagotinsek was shown a red card for the third time penalty (51st). And seven minutes before the end, Elverum was suddenly only three goals behind (31:34). August Pedersen then calmed the nerves of the SG fans with a quick counterattack to make it 37:32 (56th). The most successful Flensburg player was Jörgensen with twelve goals.

“Recken” with a strong final phase against AEK Athens

TSV Hannover-Burgdorf had to make do without their head coach Christian Prokop, who didn’t even take the flight to Athens because of a cold. Assistant coach Heidmar Felixson had the main responsibility, and he was supported by sporting director Sven-Sören Christophersen. Just like a week before when they lost 31:25 (12:14) in their home arena, the North Germans had a hard time against the Greeks in the first half. At halftime the score was 16:16.

With their own lead 25:24 and twice outnumbered, TSV goalkeeper Dario Quenstedt parried a seven-meter shot from AEK backcourt player Stipe Mandalinic. Seven minutes before the final siren, the North Germans, from whom Marian Michalczik had recently been shown the red card for the third time penalty, were leading 29:26. When Hannes Feise made it 32:27 (57th), the preliminary decision was made in favor of the “Recken”. The most successful TSV player was Uladzislau Kulesh with six goals.
