Of all the gas storage facilities in the Netherlands, the one in Norg is the most full. This is evident from figures from Gasunie. However, the filling level is lower than last year.
The storage in Norg is currently 31 percent full. Last year the counter stood at 38 percent.
‘Stock too low’
Across the Netherlands, 19 percent of the total gas storage is currently filled. In addition to Norg, there are also gas storage facilities in Grijpskerk, Alkmaar (two), and Groningen. Each is no more than 20 percent full.
According to a spokesperson, Gasunie does not determine which storage units will and will not be filled. “That is really a choice of the market. We only keep an eye on the gas supply and believe that it is now too low.”
Empty saves
A lot has changed in the gas market recently. For example, gas company GasTerra will cease to exist this year. That company traded Groningen gas for years and used the storage facilities in Norg and Grijpskerk.
Since the closure of the Groningen gas field, GasTerra no longer needs these storages. The company delivered both gas storage facilities empty on April 1.
Rich
Due to the closure of the Groningen field and the termination of GasTerra, filling the gas storage facilities is now (partly) a task for the government. State-owned Energy Management Netherlands purchases gas for storage and later sells it on to energy companies.
The gas supply in Norg is now being replenished. The storage facility in Grijpskerk, on the other hand, is still empty.
