VfL Gummersbach also won its fourth home game of the current season in the handball Bundesliga.

On Thursday evening, they achieved a never-threatened 33:22 (18:12) home win against HC Erlangen, making up for the bitter 29:32 defeat in Eisenach on the last matchday. It was Erlangen’s first away defeat of the season.

Schluroff dominates before the break

VfL underlined its home strength in the early stages. The first few minutes belonged to Miro Schluroff, who scored three of the first five Gummersbach goals to take the lead 4-2 (5th). The Oberbergische were able to break away more clearly ten minutes later: goals from Schluroff and Julian Köster put VfL in the lead 10:6 after a quarter of an hour. Gummersbach repeatedly looked for quick finishes, but occasionally acted too hastily. Since Erlangen lost numerous unnecessary balls in attack and were often denied by VfL goalkeeper Bertram Obling, Gummersbach was able to gradually increase their lead (14:7/25.).

Erlangen’s coach Johannes Sellin tried to wake up his team again during a timeout five minutes before the break. Without much effect. At the end of the first half, Gummersbach led 18:12, thanks in part to seven Schluroff goals.

Wetzlar only briefly sniffs the catch-up race

At the beginning of the second half, the guests used a majority phase to reduce the lead to 18:14 (34th). With the score at 20:15, Dominik Kuzmanovic distinguished himself for Gummersbach when he parried first the seven-meter penalty and then the follow-up throw from Viggo Kristjansson (37th). Shortly afterwards, Milos Vujovic restored the old six-goal gap (21:15/37th).

Two goals from Obling and Schluroff from their own half into the empty HC goal made the matter even clearer (23:15/41.). Before the final quarter of an hour the game was already decided. Vujovic made it into double figures for the first time with the last Gummersbach attack of the game (32:22/60th), Ellidi Snaer Vidarsson brought the final point.

The best goalscorer of the game was Gummersbach’s Schluroff with nine goals. His goalkeeper Obling ended up making 13 saves.
