Handball Bundesliga: Berlin stays tuned – Hamm first relegated

As of: 05/11/2023 9:13 p.m

The Füchse Berlin have fulfilled their duty in the tight title race of the Handball Bundesliga. On Thursday (05/11/23) the Berliners beat HC Erlangen unchallenged at home by 39:30 (19:13).

This means that coach Jaron Siewert’s team is again on a par with leaders THW Kiel and champions SC Magdeburg after plus points. The foxes are now even tied with the latter in goal difference.

Veteran Robert Weber also reached a milestone with the foxes: the Austrian, who scored six goals, was the fifth player in HBL history to score at least 2,500 goals. He is fifth in the all-time top scorer list. Teammate Hans Lindberg (2893/second place), on the other hand, is only 13 goals short of replacing Kyung Shin Yoon (2905) as the league’s all-time record goalscorer.

Hamm again second class – “disappointment is great”

Promoted ASV Hamm-Westfalen also has to return to the second division after one season. At HSG Wetzlar, which was also threatened with relegation, the Westphalians lost 24:29 (7:13) and are the first relegated team of the season. With now 8:52 points, Wetzlar in 16th place (17:43) can no longer catch up. “The disappointment is great at first. We had planned something again today”said middle man Björn Zintel after the game on Sky, “Now that it’s final, it’s painful at first. It’s not nice, but it’s part of it.”

Theoretically, the penultimate TSV GWD Minden could catch up with Wetzlar, but after the clear 27:41 (10:18) defeat against SG Flensburg-Handewitt, hopes are low. Minden is at 12:46 points, Flensburg in fourth (43:15) can only hope for the Champions League. In front of the SG is the leading trio of Berlin (47:11), Magdeburg (47:11) and Kiel (47:9).

Magdeburg wants revenge against the lions

For defending champion Magdeburg, the new edition of the cup final at cup winners Rhein-Neckar Löwen is on Sunday (2:00 p.m.), while the foxes play at Bergisches HC (16.05). Before that, THW will play at TVB Stuttgart on Saturday (8.30 p.m.).
