Irvine with third goal of the season

The Hamburgers went into the break with a deserved lead, because they had had the better chances in a tough game. Johannes Eggestein missed the first (10th minute), a little later Sandhausen goalkeeper Patrick Drewes deflected a shot from Lukas Daschner from close range with his foot past the post.

Jackson Irvine scored the goal for St. Pauli in the first half. The Australian headed in a cross from Leart Paqarada and it was his third goal of the season (38′).

The next attack almost made it 2-0, but Aleksandr Zhirov narrowly missed an own goal in an unsuccessful clearance. Again Paqarada had flanked.

Compensation with advance warning

In the second half, too, Hamburg were the better team for a long time. Manolis Saliakas was unlucky as his shot hit the post. Etienne Amenyido’s follow-up shot was blocked by Zhirov.

Sandhausen responded with an offside goal, which should have been a warning for the St. Paulians, because a similar pattern – wide cross to the back post – equalized a short time later. However, the cross was not used at the second post, but after another cross from Zhirov. David Kinsombi, who had moved from HSV to Sandhausen before the season, scored from close range (71st). The game almost tipped over completely, but a shot from Christian Kinsombi, the goalscorer’s brother, hit the post.

Luca Zander missed one last good opportunity for St. Pauli when he failed with a lob from a tight angle (86′).
