Gvardiol: Change if I “reach my limits” at RB Leipzig

Confirmed Chelsea offer

RB Leipzig’s World Cup star Josko Gvardiol does not want to force a transfer in winter and only wants to deal with his future in the summer. “I’m not in a hurry, I’m in Leipzig. We still have six months to finish the season well and win something. And then we look to the future,” said the 20-year-old in an interview with the Croatian TV station.RTL“.

The defender is still tied to the Bundesliga club until June 30, 2027, an opt-out clause should not take effect until summer 2024. Should that be drawn, Gvardiol would become the first defender to break the 100 million mark for a fee of €112 million, which has been surpassed 12 times so far. Most recently, as the second-largest market value winner in the 2022 calendar year, he had already risen to become the most valuable defender in the world with a jump to 75 million euros – level with Rúben Dias (25) from Manchester City.

Leipzig’s sports director Max Eberl has repeatedly emphasized in recent weeks that they have no interest in selling Gvardiol next summer. “They’re all in the spam folder. Gvardiol, offer, direct spam. So I haven’t received any so far,” he said on Red Bull’s home broadcaster Servus TV about requests for the Croatian World Cup bronze medalist.

RB Leipzig’s Gvardiol confirms Chelsea offer and Premier League dream

In addition to Man City and Real Madrid, Chelsea FC in particular are pushing for a change. According to Gvardiol, there were very concrete talks about a transfer with the Blues last summer. “They haven’t given up, but we agreed to talk again in the winter. Winter is here and we have to see how things continue,” said the defender. Gvardiol stressed that the Premier League has always meant a lot to him. “Ever since I was a child, I’ve always looked there,” said the RB professional. “I don’t know if I’m mature enough and ready for this league. If I realize that I’m reaching my limits in Germany, then we’ll have to look further.” Gvardiol described Liverpool FC as his dream club.

The Croatian World Cup hero got extra leave from Leipzig because he was in Qatar until the end of the tournament. Gvardiol is due to arrive at the club’s training camp in Abu Dhabi on Saturday night and start training on Sunday.
