Grid operator: companies that allow themselves to be disconnected when the power grid is overloaded will soon pay less | Interior

The high-voltage grid operator Elia wants adjusted grid tariffs from 2024. Companies that allow themselves to be partially disconnected at times when the power grid becomes overloaded will receive a discount on their bill, writes ‘De Tijd’.

Elia’s high-voltage grid is becoming saturated in more and more places. Developers of wind farms, battery farms or large industrial consumers who want to connect to the Elia grid are therefore more often subject to restrictions. Instead of a permanent connection that is guaranteed all year round, Elia is increasingly offering a flexible connection. Companies can then be switched off without compensation when the power grid is full.

This temporary solution was also used in the past, but Elia indicates that it is becoming more and more common. That is why the high-voltage network operator wants to draw up clearer rules about when companies will no longer have permanent access to the network.

Elia also wants the high-voltage grid tariffs to be adjusted, so that companies have to pay less if they can no longer purchase guaranteed power. In its tariff proposal for the period 2024-2027, Elia wants to give companies directly connected to the high-voltage grid the choice.
