Grandma Mien traveled 130 years ago from Beijing to The Hague, her old suitcase will soon show off in a new museum of migration: ‘Symbol of strength’

Every suitcase tells a story, Ernst Feekes knows, certainly the 130 -year -old suitcase of his grandmother Mien. This crazy lady traveled – together with her four children and the Chinese nanny Harry – in 1911 via the Trans -Siberian Express from Beijing to The Hague. “A whole undertaking for a woman alone,” says the former architect and portrait painter. He has loves her suitcase to Fenix, the new art museum for migration that will open in Rotterdam on 16 May. “As a symbol of self -awareness and militancy.”
