Goal Werner on return not enough for RB Leipzig victory

Timo Werner has graced his return at RB Leipzig with a goal. However, the goal of the 26-year-old striker, who came over from Chelsea earlier this week, was not enough for a victory over 1. FC Köln. RB Leipzig did not go further than 2-2.

Werner gave his team the lead after more than half an hour with a shot from distance. Köln keeper Marvin Schwäbe could blame himself for the goal, because he dived over the ball. Two years ago, Werner exchanged Leipzig for the English Premier League, where he was not as accurate as in his own country. Chelsea decided to sell him back this summer, at a big loss.

The home team also took the lead in the second half, via Christopher Nkunku, but the first victory of the season was not forthcoming. Substitute Josko Gvardiol worked the ball into his own goal in the 72nd minute, after which RB Leipzig failed to score in the remaining 20 minutes.

Red card

Leipzig played the entire second half with one man less. Hungarian Dominik Szoboszlai was sent off with a direct red card in the injury time of the first half.

RB Leipzig had also started the season with a draw last week. The away match against VfB Stuttgart ended in 1-1.

Defeat

Bayer Leverkusen suffered a defeat just like last week, now at home. FC Augsburg was 2-1 too strong for the team of defenders Mitchel Bakker and Jeremie Frimpong. Both were switched. At Augsburg, captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw played the entire game.

Hoffenheim turned an early 2-0 deficit against VfL Bochum into a win. Israeli substitute Munas Dabbur determined the final score at 3-2 just before time.

The game between Hertha BSC and Eintracht Frankfurt ended in 1-1. Eintracht, which Filip Kostic sold to Juventus this week, lost 2-0 to Real Madrid in the European Supercup battle on Wednesday. The club had started the season with a 6-1 loss against Bayern Munich, which will face Werder Bremen on Sunday.
