Fifty asylum seekers slept in the night shelter in Gieten last night. There was no room for these people in the registration center in Ter Apel. It was the last night that they could go to the De Goorns sports hall.
It was not the first time that the municipality of Aa en Hunze helped. Asylum seekers who could not go to the overcrowded Ter Apel also spent a night in Gieten on May 21.
Last week, the municipality of Borger-Odoorn also helped. Asylum seekers were able to stay in the Hunsowhal in 2e Exloërmond for three nights in a row.
It is not clear which municipality will receive asylum seekers in the coming nights when it is too busy in Ter Apel. There is no structural solution for the overcrowded registration center yet.
“Once again people are in uncertainty and do not know where they can go tonight,” says a spokeswoman for the Red Cross. The organization, which guides asylum seekers, “once again strongly calls on the government to resolve the situation that has been going on for almost three weeks as quickly as possible.”
No people slept on the field in front of the registration center last night. Some asylum seekers chose to spend the night in Ter Apel on previous nights, instead of going to a night shelter in another place.
