‘Giel de Winter is a typical YouTube generation, can’t stand criticism’

Giel de Winter is a typical example of the generation of content creators that start on YouTube and cannot tolerate criticism when the real work begins, says AD journalist Marcus den Blanken.

Giel de Winter’s self-confidence knows no bounds: he finds criticism of his work unjustified without exception. What he does is great and what the rest of the media world does is outdated, he thinks. When Angela de Jong took it into her head to point out the low viewing figures of his TV version of The Hunting Season, he reacted pissed off.

Be critical of yourself

AD journalist Marcus den Blanken points out that Giel is a typical example of the generation of content creators that starts on YouTube. “You can try everything on YouTube and it doesn’t have to be perfect, but once you take that step to the big job, you have to be critical of yourself,” he explains in the AD Media podcast.

Such a Giel should therefore simply be able to listen to people with much more experience, says Marcus. “If someone says, ‘Hey, do this differently, do that differently, or why are you doing this shot?’, you have to change that.”

‘Giel can’t take criticism’

Marcus thinks that Giel’s resilience is very low. “You notice it with that boy from StukTV. When there is criticism of that program The Hunting Season, it is immediately like: ‘But look how great it is!!!’ There are also parts that they need to learn from, but apparently that is not possible with the generation that grew up with their YouTube hits.”

His AD colleague Angela de Jong thinks that such guys just have too many yes-men around them. “Too often people’s faces say it’s all great, when it’s not.”
