In 2012, the creative North Sea women from Wenduine gave an existing giant from Baasrode, East Flanders, a second life as Giant Gust, the washed up. De Reus is sculpted according to the image of Gustaaf van Praet, a eel fisherman and carnivalist from Baasrode, who regularly came to Wenduine on vacation.
De Reus has three costumes: a eel fishing outfit, a second outfit that refers to brewers and shipowners, and an outfit for trammelant. Mayor Wilfried Vandaele: “Giants are a living piece of folklore and identity. With Gust the washed up we add a meaningful figure to the Wenduine giant community. This heritage is preserved for the next generations.”
Together with Giant Louw, Wanne, Scuteman and Pol de Kruwer, Gust den washed -up now gets a permanent place in the holy cross -raising church of Wenduine.
