The test match between Germany and Ghana will be a reunion for some professionals, as an African trio has already worn the DFB uniform.

The second international match of the year is scheduled for the German national team on Monday evening (from 8:45 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online). In Stuttgart the DFB team meets World Cup participants Ghana. For a trio of Africans, it is much more than just a test match: Ransford Königsdörffer, Derrick Köhn and Patric Pfeiffer all have a DFB past.

Königsdörffer, born in Berlin and trained at Hertha BSC, has been playing for his father’s home country since September 2022. He previously played a total of three games for the German U20 and U21 national teams, scoring one goal. The HSV professional played alongside today’s senior national players Angelo Stiller and Malick Thiaw, among others.

Both could be his opponents on Monday evening, as they are in the DFB squad. Königsdörffer, like Stiller, was called up as two strikers, Iñaki Williams and Brandon Thomas-Asante, are out. He is still fighting for his World Cup ticket, but national coach Otto Addo gave him hope at the press conference before the Germany game: “The development is going in the right direction because he also scored a few goals in the second series. The World Cup train has definitely not left the mark for him.”

There is a “tight race” in Ghana’s storm because the national coach sees an “oversupply” there. So Königsdörffer has to prove himself. The situation at Köhn is likely to be similar. The Union Berlin left-back only made his debut for Ghana last November and made his second international appearance on Friday. The native of Hamburg, trained at HSV, has already played more games for his parents’ home country than for the DFB. He played once for Germany’s U19s.

“It’s a bit surreal, but the anticipation is huge,” he said on the DFB website. His decision to play for Ghana had primarily to do with national coach Addo, who also comes from Hamburg. The conversations with him played a crucial role,” explained Köhn. The connection was already “special” during our shared times at HSV.
