France expert Gernot Rohr speaks on t-online about FC Bayern’s duel with Paris Saint-Germain. And reveals an explosive secret that concerns a Bayern star.
The whole of Europe is looking forward to this duel. With 15 wins in the first 15 competitive games, FC Bayern travels to the French capital for a showdown with Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain. PSG goes into the game as leaders of the premier class – level on points with second-placed Bayern. In France too, expectations of the comparison between the two top European clubs are huge.
Gernot Rohr is no exception. The 72-year-old once played for FC Bayern himself, with Franz Beckenbauer, Uli Hoeneß, Gerd Müller, Sepp Maier and Paul Breitner, among others. He has had French citizenship since 1983 and lives near Bordeaux. In an interview with t-online he spoke about the Champions League clash between Bayern and PSG.
t-online: Mr. Rohr, FC Bayern is playing against Paris Saint-Germain in the league phase of the Champions League. What significance does this game have in France? Will it be seen as an anticipated duel for the European football throne?
Gernot Rohr: Here we are definitely talking about the two best club teams in the world at the moment. Everyone is waiting for this game, there is a lot of anticipation. One has the impression that Paris is becoming increasingly stronger internationally. Although they are also having a few problems in the French league at the moment. They no longer win all the games as they sometimes did in the past, and they have their difficulties, especially due to injuries. Nevertheless, they have a run in Europe and they want to continue it.
How do you currently assess the balance of power between PSG and FC Bayern?
Paris are the reigning champions, play at home and are a very well-coordinated team. That’s why I see PSG as favorites, although I’m obviously keeping my fingers crossed for Bayern. Ousmane Dembélé is now fit again, but they have now lost Désiré Doué, who was injured. After this intense summer with the Club World Cup, it was clear that a little low could come. Nevertheless, you expect a good game in Paris and of course a good result – even if it’s against Bayern. But of course it will be an interesting duel. Especially when you look at the results of the two teams, especially those of Bayern, of course, who set a new record in Europe with 15 wins in their first 15 competitive games.
