Italy’s hopes at the U21 European Championship to a hard rehearsal. The game becomes a personal tragedy, especially for one player.

In the quarter-finals of the U21 European Championship between Italy and Germany, the evening for Wilfried Gnonto ended prematurely-and emotionally. At 1-1 in the regular season, the Italian striker was put off the pitch with yellow-red. The 21-year-old could not hide his disappointment and broke out in tears on the field.

What happened? In the 80th minute of the game, the attacker of Leeds United grown into the already playing German central defender Max Rosenfelder. Gnonto came far too late, the foul was punished with yellow – his second warning of the game, after an earlier in the 63rd minute. The consequence: dismissal.

Immediately after the red card it became emotional. Gnonto recognized the impact of forced his team outnumbered. The teammates hurried, tried to calm him down and build it up.

The spectators in the stadium also reacted with sympathy. There was applause from the ranks for the indoors’ player. After a quarter-final thriller that ended in the extension, Germany finally prevailed 3-2.
