NICOSIA (dpa-AFX) – Germany wants to push forward the idea of return centers for rejected asylum seekers in third countries with four other EU countries. Agreements were reached today in a working group with Greece, Austria, Denmark and the Netherlands, said the CSU politician at a meeting of EU interior ministers in the Cypriot capital Nicosia. The European Commission should also accompany the process.
A roadmap should be developed together with which third countries could develop “innovative models”. The EU states want to create the legal basis at the European level to be able to set up return centers in third countries. They agreed on this in December. Asylum seekers who are required to leave the country and who cannot be deported to their home countries or countries of origin are supposed to land in these so-called return hubs.
The EU Parliament still has to take a position on return centers
The European Parliament still has to take a position on the proposals. Negotiations on the regulation can then begin. Only then would a legal basis for return centers in third countries be created.
Past decisions on migration laws, for example when determining safe countries of origin or the legal basis for asylum procedures in third countries, were passed in the EU Parliament with a right-wing majority. EU states and Parliament then reached agreement on these issues comparatively quickly./tre/DP/mis
