The dream of defending the title is alive for Ivory Coast: a clear victory means the team is in the last eight of the Africa Cup of Nations. A Bundesliga player also scores.

Ivory Coast prevailed in the round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations with a clear 3-0 win against Burkina Faso. Amad Diallo (20th) and Yan Diomande (32nd) scored the early goals, while Bazoumana Touré (87th) added the finishing touch. Now the defending champions will face Egypt, who are considered the record winners, in the quarter-finals.

The Ivorians dominated the round of 16 in Marrakech from the start with intense counter-pressing and determined tackling. They already had a clear advantage in the first half with 13:2 shots.

Burkina Faso was only able to build up more pressure after a good hour. Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba played through while Freiburg’s Cyriaque Irié was substituted. Tapsoba had the opportunity to score with a free kick from a central position in the 68th minute, but the ball ended up in the wall.

Ivory Coast will face Egypt in the quarter-finals on Saturday at 8 p.m. in Agadir. On the same day, Algeria will fight against Nigeria in Marrakech for a place in the semi-finals. The first quarter-final games will take place on Friday, when Senegal plays against Mali in Tangier and hosts Morocco play against Cameroon in Rabat.

National coach Emerse Faé’s Ivory Coast will face the German national team in the group stage of the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico on June 20th in Toronto.
