After an early deficit, Germany clearly loses the Netherlands against the title favorite. The decisive game for moving into the round of the best four follows on Wednesday.

Germany’s hockey women had to accept a setback at the home European Championships in Mönchengladbach. Against Olympic champion Netherlands, the team of national coach Janneke Schopman lost 1: 5 (1: 4) after a weak start and now has to fight for the semi -finals in the decisive group game against Ireland on Wednesday (8:00 p.m./Magenta Sport).

“In the beginning it was just too fast for us. We weren’t awake enough in our heads. If the first three goals do not happen, it will be another game,” said captain Linnea Weidemann in magenta. After 35 seconds, Freeke Moes put the Dutch in the lead. Without the injured Sonja Zimmermann (thighs) and Felicia Wiedermann (knee), the German defensive lacked stability. Frédérique Matla (10th) and Pien Sanders (13th) increased to 3: 0 in the first quarter.

After the opening victory against France (4: 1), the DHB women had hoped for a surprise. But the Netherlands, undefeated for 22 EM games, continued to determine the events and expanded the lead by Sanders (24th) and Marijn Veen (54th). Lena Micheel (19th) scored the only goal for Germany after a penalty corner.

The German team has been waiting for a win at an EM against the twelve -time title holder for 18 years.

With three points, Germany now needs a victory against Ireland (0 points) to surely reach the semi -finals in the remote duel with France (3 points). The two best teams in group A move into the preliminary round. The Netherlands (6 points) already have the progress.

The German men can make it perfect on Tuesday (7.30 p.m./Magenta Sport) with a win against Poland.
