The tobogganing championship in Canada begins for Germany. Max Langenhan and Julia Taubitz drive to gold. The double-seat seasons get silver and bronze in whistler.

Start with gold, silver and bronze: Julia Taubitz and Max Langenhan brought the first gold medal for the German team at the Wishrodel World Championships in Whistler in Canada. At the premiere of the mixed relay, the duo in the one-seater prevailed in front of the Americans Jonathan Eric Gustafson/Emily Sweeny (+0.095 seconds) and the Austrians David Gleirscher/Madeleine Egle (+0.324).

“A cool start to the World Cup. It is of course really nice to cope with the first single mixed World Cup with gold,” said Langenhan. “I was lucky that the Max was doing such a good run down, I left the time a bit,” said Julia Taubitz with her teammate.

Merle Fräbel and David Nössler did not reach the finish line after David Nössler could not trigger the touchpad after a fast fall. Like Max Langenhan, the 23-year-old was in the ice channel with a broken foot.

Previously, the double-seat teams had brought in the first two World Cup medals. Dajana Eitberger/Magdalena Matschina and Hannes Orlamünder/Paul Gubitz as well as the record Olympic champion Tobias Wendl/Tobias Arlt and Jessica Degenhardt/Cheyenne Rosenthal had to surrender to Austria. The two German teams were 0.018 seconds or 0.097 seconds behind Thomas Steu/Wolfgang Kindl and Selina Egle/Lara Michaela Kipp.

“We take a medal with us. We can be more than satisfied with that,” said Gubitz. Orlamünder reminded that the Duo’s World Cup adventure started with a training fall. “I am super happy. The narrow deficit is annoying, but we don’t look at it,” said Dajana Eitberger.

The mixed relay replaces the sprint competition among the racing tobogganists. The title fights on the 2010 Olympic Railway end on Sunday night with the team relay. Before that, the double-seaters and the single-seaters are about the World Cup medals.
