The German volleyball players had a difficult start in the Nations League. Now the knot seems to have burst – against a strong opponent.

After three exhausting games, the German national volleyball team had their first victory in the Nations League in the fourth attempt-and against none other than the incumbent Olympic champion France. In Québec, the team of national coach Michal Winiarski prevailed 3-1 on Sunday (23:25, 25:19, 29:27, 29:27).

With the success, the DVV selection climbed into midfield in the table of the 18 teams. Particularly gratifying: it was a kind of sporting reparation after France had conquered Germany in the quarter -finals of the Olympic Games.

In Canada, the team had to do without experienced top performers such as Georg Grozer or Tobias Krick. Trainer Winiarski deliberately used the first tournament phase for a phase of upheaval. The aim is to “win as much as possible and to develop young players,” he had explained in advance.

In the first phase of the Nations League, all 18 teams play a total of twelve games over three weeks. The eight best teams qualify for the final tournament. The next stage is already waiting: From June 25th to 29th, Germany will meet Cuba, the Netherlands, Iran and host Serbia in Belgrade.
