For a long time it was quiet around her in the tennis world. Now Eugenie Bouchard has ended her career. In Montreal, the Canadian wants to say goodbye to the fans.
Former Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard (31) ends her tennis career. At the WTA tournament in her hometown Montreal, which begins on July 26, she will officially say goodbye to the professional tennis. “You know when the time came. For me it is now,” wrote the former world ranking fifth on their social media channels.
Bouchard had hardly played on the WTA tour in recent years. After stubborn shoulder problems, she temporarily tried in pickle ball and as a TV expert. She celebrated her greatest sporting success in 2014: in Wimbledon she was the first Canadian to reach a Grand Slam final, but was subject to Czech Petra Kvitová.
In the same year she was also in the semi -finals at the Australian Open and the French Open. She won her only WTA single title in 2014 at the sandplane tournament in Nuremberg. Her last appearance in the main field of a Grand Slam was at the French Open in 2020. In 2023 she was still in the contingent of the Canadian team, who won the title at Billie Jean King Cup, but was not used in the final against Italy (2-0).
Bouchard also made her career next to the court when she met several dates with a fan. The Canadian had tweeted at the Super Bowl 2017 at 28: 3 in favor of the Atlanta Falcons that she “knew that the Falcons would win”.
A fan bet on a victory of the New England Patriots. As a betting operation, he demanded a date. The Patriots won the game 34:28 and Bouchard held word. In fact, it was not at a meeting. The two developed a friendship that may also continue after Bouchard’s career.
